Cord walked the beach in the early morning. The tide was low and the sand was hard packed under his feet. A gull cried out overhead as two others tore at the claw of a crab. Amid the shells and stones Cord spied bits of circuitry and wire tangled in the seaweed. He bent down and pulled at a long green wire. It attached to something bigger. From out of the sand he unearther a silver box. The Yedek army had forever been dumping their outdated equiptment into the sea. What washed up on shore were treasures for the taking. This radio component would need a little tinkering, but Cord would get it working.
He brushed off the sand and held it up to his ear. At that moment there was a sound, like a great ripping, as if the sky itself was being torn in two.
The sound came not from the radio but just offshore where a massive black cube rose out of the water and hurldled into the sky. Cord blinked and it was gone. He had no idea what he had seen. The Yedek could be testing all matter of weaponry. He shook his head and kept walking.
